Rapid City Public Works Shatter Records in Pack the Pantry Drive

AFSCME Local 1031’s annual Pack the Pantry food drive wrapped up with unprecedented success, collecting 4,877 pounds of food and $2,826 in donations more than doubling last year’s totals. The effort, which kicked off November 3, was led by public works employees who saw their community stepping up in an extraordinary way.
Local 1031 President Sean Jewett said members could feel a heightened urgency this year. Ongoing cuts and uncertainty around SNAP benefits have put real strain on families across the region. While those administrative decisions are hurting the public, Rapid City residents responded with generosity that far exceeded expectations.
In total, the food donations alone will provide over 20,000 meals for local families. Monetary donations will support Meals on Wheels and the Backpack Program through Feeding South Dakota, ensuring children and seniors have reliable access to nutritious meals.
AFSCME Local 1031 is proud to lead this yearly effort and grateful to everyone who contributed to making 2025 the most impactful Pack the Pantry drive yet.
