Why Join AFSCME Council 65?
AFSCME Council 65 has stood with working people for over 60 years—helping thousands of public service workers build power and win real improvements on the job. If you believe in standing up for your work, your co-workers, and your community, you're in the right place.
We Represent People Who Serve the Public
Today, AFSCME Council 65 represents more than 16,000 workers in cities, counties, school districts, nonprofits, and health care facilities across Minnesota and South Dakota. Our members include:
- Direct care workers and nurses
- Correctional officers and law enforcement
- Clerical and paraprofessional staff
- Bus drivers, custodians, and maintenance crews
- Social workers, legal professionals, and more
In just one year, over 1500 new members joined from state agencies, clinics, courthouses, and more. Whether you're in a small town or a large city, we're ready to help you build a union that works.
Why Organize Now?
Public service workers are under pressure. Politicians are cutting budgets, outsourcing vital jobs, and attacking pensions and benefits. But we know the truth: working people like you are the backbone of our communities. When we organize, we push back and win.
Organizing a union means bargaining for:
- Fair pay and regular raises
- Affordable health care
- Retirement security
- Safe and respectful workplaces
- A real voice in workplace decisions
You shouldn’t have to choose between serving your community and supporting your family. A union helps you do both and AFSCME Council 65 is here to help you every step of the way.
How It Works
Starting a union is about building power together. With Council 65’s support, workers form organizing committees, talk with coworkers, and build majority support. Once you vote yes, management is legally required to negotiate a fair contract.
That contract is bargained by a committee of your peers and must be approved by a majority of your coworkers. It’s democratic, transparent, and backed by the full strength of AFSCME.
